Des Moines River Water Trail - Eldon to Farmington
Imagine yourself floating down a river along the banks of towns that time forgot, through the beauty of a state forest, past scenes of idyllic farm country. That's what you'll find on a float down the lower Des Moines River from Eldon to Farmington, Iowa.
A trip down these 44 miles of river can be about more than just paddling. You can stop for ice cream, spend the night in a historic hotel, explore an old (but still active) pottery, set up camp or even switch gears and saddle up for a horseback ride.
What really sets this stretch apart is the historic significance. Nine sites adjacent to the river are on the National Register of Historic Places and there are two historic districts.
This part of southeast Iowa is the perfect place to get away from it all while you connect to nature and the past.
